At Elevation, our mission is to transform North Shields into a vibrant canvas for public art as part of the town’s 800th anniversary celebrations. We have identified 8 key buildings with prominent elevations, such as gable end walls, to host a series of striking murals. These murals will not only beautify our town but also create an engaging art trail that invites exploration and appreciation.
Big Artworks for a Big Birthday
We believe that well-designed public art can transform perceptions and attitudes. North Shields, with its rich history and dynamic present, is the perfect canvas for such art. Founded in 1225, the town has seen economic ups and downs, particularly with recent declines in primary industries. Despite these challenges, local resilience and regeneration efforts are thriving. Through vibrant street art that celebrates our heritage and culture, we aim to boost creativity and optimism, enhancing North Shields for both residents and visitors.
Setting New Standards in Mural Art
Our ambition is to set a new standard for mural quality, drawing inspiration from a new generation of outdoor artists who have flourished thanks to the recent boom in street-art festivals. In 2024, we introduced a ‘taster’ mural created by the renowned artist Prefab_77. This piece, located on Albion Road, has been well-received and showcases the innovative potential of mural art. Our goal is to achieve artwork of the highest standard that fosters local pride and attracts visitors from far and wide.
Local Volunteers Driving Public Art and Community Pride
Elevation is a registered arts charity (No. 1209381), operated entirely by local volunteers who are passionate about making a difference in our community. Our trustees are committed to not only celebrating North Shields' 800th anniversary, but also to sustaining and expanding our public art initiatives well beyond 2025. Our vision extends past the anniversary year. We are dedicated to continually championing and creating public artworks, connecting artists, communities, and property owners to produce striking art across more parts of the town.
